Spalted Wood

What is Spalted Wood?

Spalted wood is wood that has been altered by a specific type of decay caused by fungi, resulting in unique and often beautiful patterns of discoloration and texture. These patterns, known as zone lines, are created by the fungi as they feed on the wood. Spalted wood is highly valued by woodworkers for its aesthetic qualities and is often used in high-end furniture and other decorative pieces.

More on Spalted Wood

  • Fungal Decay: Spalting is primarily caused by white rot fungi, which breaks down the lignin in wood, leaving behind a distinctive appearance.
  • Unique Patterns: The fungal activity creates striking patterns, including dark zone lines, shifting hues, and varying textures. It can leave some areas soft or “punky”.
  • In High Demand: The visually appealing nature of spalted wood makes it a favorite among woodworkers and is often used in high-end projects where a unique and natural look is desired.
  • Induced Spalting: While spalted wood is often found naturally, some individuals and businesses also induce spalting in logs to produce their own supply.
  • Examples: Spalted maple, spalted beech, spalted birch, and spalted sycamore are common examples of spalted wood.
